Nick has always been good at English courses (the fact that his father is an English literature professor might have helped a little). He studied English language and linguistics at Brigham Young University, with a double minor in editing and music. His love of the English language shows in several other ways besides editing, including taking a class on constructing new languages and spouting out lots of puns in the nick of time!
His other interests and hobbies include music (cello, harmonica, beat-boxing, as well as writing original compositions), board games (he knows all the best Monopoly strategies), and role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. Nick likes to think of himself as a nerd, but in all of the cool things.
Facts About Nick
Where are you from?
I was born in Utah and spent grades K–2 in Indiana, but I consider myself raised in Minnesota (grades 3–12). Yes, I like winter and snow. No, I don’t have a Minnesota accent, but I could do it on demand. BYU brought me back to Utah, and meeting my wife here convinced me to stay.
Do you consider yourself an extrovert or introvert?
I feel I’m more of an introvert. I tend to “recharge” in quieter, more solitary moments.
What is your spirit animal?
I don’t really know, but I do know my patronus. It’s a dolphin. It was unexpected, but I’m going with that. Dolphin.
If you could choose your last meal, what would it be?
Whatever it is, it will have to be with my wife at least. As for the food, Navajo tacos. Though I’ve lived near the Navajo reservation for a couple years, I’ve never been able to make great frybread. So, any opportunity I can get good Navajo tacos, I take it.
What band/musical artist could you listen to for hours straight?
The Piano Guys. I love their style and their humor, and their repertoire is fairly diverse.
What is your favorite (or one of your favorite) fandom(s)?
Just one? Well, one that’s a little less common is Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). I’ve been playing with friends and family for over a year now, and I love the stories (humorous and epic) that we create.
What is the nicest thing anyone’s done for you?
The first thing I can think of happened in the beginning of this past January. I got a painful infection in my left leg (the result of my first pedicure, which I was talked into). I needed to stay at the hospital for about four days for proper antibiotic treatment. All I could do that whole time was lie in a hospital bed for what felt like an eternity. There wasn’t much my wife could do to help, but she spent each night in the hospital with me, sleeping on a chair. I really appreciated her company during that time, even though she didn’t have to.
What is the next item you plan to cross off your bucket list?
I’ve got a couple of personal journal projects I want to complete this year, including a book of all the childhood memories I can recall, as well as a logbook of my best D&D adventures.
Who is your favorite Beatle?
I don’t know the Beatles that well, to be honest, so I will go with Ringo Star, because that’s the best name in the group . . . or in all of England.
What’s your favorite Disney Movie?
Oh come on, not this impossible question. Well, if I had to choose one, I’d choose Wall-E. Why? First, adorable robots. Second, the Thomas Newman music. Third, Hello Dolly references.
